Catapult Challenge
The last few days before break, our science class was very busy. My 7th grade students formed Engineering teams and were challenged to design a catapult that could launch a ping pong ball 8 meters (28 ft) and knock over a stack of cups. Each team was limited to a small baggy of materials. The popsicle sticks and spoons were the most popular choice. Once the teams had their prototype completed they tested and collected data. Some groups had to go back to the drawing board, while others just tweaked their designs to get a greater launch distance. Every group was able to redesign their catapult for a better performance. Great Job!! | Straw Towers My 8th grade students formed engineering teams to design and build straw towers. The goal was to build a structure that could hold a full pop for at least 2 minutes. In order to be the champion, students challenged themselves to build the tallest structure. Tower height was measured from the base of the tower to the point where the pop was being supported. Teams were given a set list of materials to build and then they were also given $10 in "Straw Bucks" to buy more materials in the Hudgeons' Hardware Store. Every group put in a tremendous effort working on their project. Excellent job! |
