Students launched their hot air balloons for a second time today. There was very little wind and colder temperatures, which was more ideal for the launch. At least 6 groups built balloons that successfully traveled outside of the tennis court earning extra credit. Overall, the design teams did a great job of testing and rebuilding their balloons!

We are studying the periodic table in 8th grade. Here are some fun songs about the elements that we listened to in class. Your child will learn the 44 most common elements and their symbols during this unit. They made flashcards to help them study and can go to the following link to play games 44 Most Common Elements on Quizlet.com. We have been studying different parts of the cell and the processes that allow materials to enter through the cell membrane. Students have also learned about hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic solutions. They had a great time in this week long lab investigating what would happen to their egg when placed into different solutions. Each day they took measurements, made predictions, and analyzed the data they collected. We all had a lot of fun! Today we had our Day 1 Launch. James, Tristan, and Colton had the winning balloon by going out of the tennis court. Maddie, Skyilar, and Kayla tied for second with Hailey, Haley, and Elisea's balloon by going to the fence. My 7th graders have been learning how to use microscopes this week. They are having so much fun exploring the microscopic world. We looked at pond water for two days. They found so many interesting creatures and were so eager to share what they found. I kept hearing, "Mrs. Hudgeons, you have to come over and see this!" We had a great time! My 8th grade students have begun working on their hot air balloons. The goal for this project is to design and create a hot air balloon that can travel at least eight meters (28 ft). The design teams are working hard to try and be the ultimate winners for the year by building a balloon that will go outside of the tennis court and beyond. Right now we are in the trial and error process. Many groups have discovered that using tape may not be the best way to get their balloon to work. |
