For the past two weeks, we have been studying ecology. Students dissected an owl pellet in order to investigate how organisms interact with each other in a food web. They hypothesized about what type of organisms they would find based on their background knowledge of an owl's diet and their initial observations of the pellet. Then they classified the bones, created a "bone" collection identifying what they found, wrote a conclusion, and a critique for the experiment. Today, they learned how to use a dichotomous key to be able to classify the type of skulls they found in the pellets. Interestingly enough, my first hour found over 30 vole skulls in the 12 pellets that were dissected. How cool! | I love to hear their exclamations of surprise when they see all of the bones in the small pellets. I wander from one end of the room to another in response to, "Mrs. Hudgeons! Come here! You have to see this!" |
